Dalam bahasa Indonesia Idiom dibedakan menjadi dua macam, yaitu :

1. Idiom penuh

Yaitu ungkapan yang seluruh unsur pembentuknya tidak sanggup dikembalikan kepada makna awal atau makna denotasinya/sebenarnya dari masing-masing kata tersebut.
Contoh :

a. Gulung tikar : bangkrut.
b. Buah hati  : kesayangan (anak kesayangan)

Pada pola (a) kata makna kata "gulung" dan "tikar" sama sekali tidak berafiliasi dengan makna ungkapan "gulung tikar" yang berarti "bangkrut".
Demikian juga pada ungkapan "buah hati".

2. Idiom sebagian

Yaitu ungkapan yang sebagian unsur pembentuknya masih sanggup dikembalikan kepada makna asal (denotasinya).
Contoh:

a.  Kabar burung : isu yang belum tentu kebenarannya.
b.  Daftar hitam : daftar nama orang yang terlibat dalam tindak kejahatan.

Pada pola di atas, kata "kabar" dan "daftar" masih sanggup dikembalikan pada makna denotasinya. Kata "kabar" dan kata "daftar" masih mempunyai makna yang sama dengan makna asalanya.
